Rescue operation by the MS de Jordaan
"The water remains unpredictable"
When an ordinary music cruise suddenly turns into an exciting mission - our captain proves that sailing is much more than just floating around.
Yesterday at the end of the afternoon, our MS de Jordaan again made her traditional music cruise across the IJ. Guests enjoyed bitterballen, pleasant music and the Amsterdam water. But what started as a relaxing party cruise suddenly turned into a rescue mission that shows why real sailors always stay alert.
"Our captain had already noticed the pancake boat because there were some crazy movements to be seen," owner Olav van den Broek says in an interview. The water can be so treacherous - what seems normal at first glance can become dangerous within seconds. "Then the message came over the VHF radio that the boat had become adrift."
Being captain is so much more.
At that moment it became clear why being captain means so much more than just sailing around with cheerful guests. While the pancake boat threatened to crash into the Jan Schaefer Bridge due to engine trouble, our crew showed what true seamanship is all about. "Competitor or not, in shipping you always help each other," Van den Broek emphasized the age-old seafarers' code. "We asked how far the port service was and it would be on the way for some time, so then we decided to offer our help."
Despite the strong winds - because the water remains unpredictable - our experienced crew managed to get a rope on and pull the pancake boat safely away. And the best part? "The party inside went on as usual. The music even stayed on during the rescue."
Gratitude and recognition.
Christoffel Wielders of the pancake boat expressed great gratitude: "We were helped very nicely, great, very friendly." A witness later confirmed, "Fortunately, rescue of the MS de Jordaan came just in time to avoid a collision with the bridge," he told AT5. The incident proves once again that the MS de Jordaan is not only known as THE Amsterdam party boat, but also when it comes down to it shows true Amsterdam solidarity. The rescue even received coverage on Arjen Lubach's evening show, which perfectly sums up the unique situation - a party boat holding up while the party went on.
A tasty thank you.
As a token of appreciation, Christopher Wielders invited the entire crew of the MS de Jordaan for a delicious evening of pancakes aboard his boat. "We would like to thank our rescuers as we should," Wielders said. And the best part? This time on a boat that can just be steered again! ;)
